Surprise Link of Low Cholesterol and Low Moods, Depressing Feeling —  The Low Serum Cholesterol Study

A surprising study found that low serum cholesterol isn’t always a win when it comes to health. It turns out that very low cholesterol may be linked to a higher risk of depression, impulsive behavior, and even sudden death from external causes.

It’s one of the 10 studies I keep on hand to help explain why I focus so much on real food, protein, and fat for healing.

Here’s the study from the Journal of Psychiatric Research
Low serum cholesterol and external-cause mortality: Potential implications for research and surveillance

Key takeaways from the study …

1. Cholesterol affects more than heart health
Cholesterol plays key roles in brain cell signaling, hormone production, and mood regulation. When levels dip too low, it might disrupt the chemicals in our brain that manage emotions and impulse control. If you’ve been strictly limiting fats and your mood tanked, this may help explain it.

2. Low mood can come from low cholesterol
A history with low cholesterol, especially under 150 mg/dL, has been linked to depression, higher risk of self-harm, and impulsive actions. If you’ve been following a very low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and notice mood changes or low energy, don’t ignore it. You can’t out-willpower bad biochemistry.

3. Balance matters more than extremes
If you’re struggling with diet or feeling emotionally off, this isn’t you failing. It’s your environment. Over-emphasis on ultra-low cholesterol could be creating real issues. We need a diet that supports our body’s need for fats and cholesterol, not a war on them.

4. Small food shifts that support your mood
Try adding nutrient-dense, cholesterol-rich foods if you’ve been avoiding fats: pastured eggs, liver, cold-water fish, avocado, or grass-fed butter. These help support both mood and hormone balance.

For some people, very low cholesterol can affect brain function, mood, and impulse control.

Lab results are tricky too because these days “averages” are based on folks who are not eating well.

A couple of eggs, some salmon, or more butter can make a real difference.

Give it two weeks and notice how you feel—mood, focus, and energy.
